Gold Tops $4,100 as Middle East Risk Dominates the Tape

The Golden Risk Index sits at 6.81, in buy-mood territory, as gold jumps 1.79% on the day while its correlation with Bitcoin and copper tightens sharply and with the US dollar and yuan loosens.

The Read

The Golden Risk Index reads 6.81 out of 10, a buy-mood setting built from 4,100 weighted stories across 352 countries with full evidence coverage. It has barely moved in 24 hours, up 0.09. Gold itself has: spot sits at $4,101.60, up 1.79% on the day and 1.42% on the week, though still down 2.90% over the month and 14.29% over three months. The one-year gain remains a substantial 23.86%. The metal is trading 22.9% below its 52-week high of $5,318.40, and realised volatility over the past 30 days runs at 26.7% annualised — brisk, but not disorderly.

What Gold Is Moving With

The sharpest change in gold's relationships isn't with another metal or with equities — it's with the yuan. USD/CNY has swung from a near-zero 365-day correlation of -0.09 to -0.56 over the past 30 days, a shift of 0.47, the largest movement in the dataset. That is a currency relationship tightening fast, worth watching given gold's dollar-pricing mechanics.

Bitcoin is the second-biggest mover: its correlation with gold has gone from a weak 0.11 over the year to 0.50 over the past month, all three windows statistically significant. Copper tells a similar story — from 0.39 to 0.67, also tightening across every horizon and significant throughout. VIX has tightened too, from -0.08 to -0.35, though the 30-day reading itself isn't statistically significant.

Against that, the more traditional gold correlates are loosening slightly. USD/INR, the five-year Treasury yield, EUR/USD and GBP/USD have all drifted apart from gold by 0.10 to 0.13 over the same window. Silver, platinum and gold miners remain gold's tightest and steadiest partners, with 30-day correlations of 0.87, 0.80 and 0.76 respectively, all significant and largely unchanged from their yearly readings.

The News Flow

Geopolitical risk is doing the heavy lifting: it carries a polarity of +0.483 across 1,206 stories, by far the heaviest-weighted channel in the mix. Direct gold commentary adds a further +0.316 from 774 stories. Equity risk appetite contributes a smaller positive tilt of +0.102.

Pulling the other way: real yields (-0.355), monetary policy (-0.168), the US dollar (-0.155) and inflation (-0.141) are all running negative, though none carries the weight of the geopolitical channel. Today's headlines fit the pattern squarely — reports of gold at a two-week high amid Fed-outlook uncertainty and Middle East tensions, an FXStreet piece flagging $4,150 as traders track US-Iran diplomacy, and German and Russian coverage attributing the rally to signs of de-escalation in the Middle East. A Vietnamese report on the US-Iran standoff notes firepower still outweighing diplomacy — a reminder the story is unresolved.

What To Watch

On the question of whether the index leads the price, the data so far says no: correlations between the index reading and gold's move 1, 3, 6 and 12 hours later are all statistically insignificant, drawn from just 64 hours of index history. No lead relationship is established yet.

Worth tracking from here: whether the Iran diplomacy headlines firm into an actual de-escalation or reverse, whether the newly tight Bitcoin and copper correlations hold or prove a passing feature of this month's volatility, and whether real yields — currently the most negative channel — start pulling harder against the geopolitical bid.
