Gold's Bitcoin Correlation Snaps Tight as War Risk Dominates
The Golden Risk Index holds at 6.61 in buy-mood territory as gold's 30-day correlation with Bitcoin and copper tightens sharply, even as geopolitical headlines from the Gulf and Ukraine swamp the news flow.
The Read
The Golden Risk Index sits at 6.61 out of 10, in buy-mood territory, up 0.13 on the day. Coverage is full — 3,664 weighted stories from 532 countries feed this reading. Spot gold is at $4,067.60, up 0.52% on the day and 1.37% on the week, though it remains 1.51% lower over the month and 15.37% lower over three months. The 52-week range runs from $3,293.20 to $5,318.40, and gold now sits 23.5% below that high. Realised volatility over 30 days is 25.7% annualised — elevated, and consistent with a market still digesting the pullback from its peak even as the year-on-year gain holds at 21.20%.
What Gold Is Moving With
The standout move is Bitcoin. Its 30-day correlation with gold has jumped to +0.50 from a 365-day reading of just +0.11 — a shift of 0.39, the largest in the data. Copper tells a similar story: +0.68 over 30 days versus +0.39 over the year, a shift of +0.29. Both point the same way — gold is trading less like an isolated hedge and more in step with the broader risk-asset complex right now, alongside the S&P 500, whose 30-day correlation of +0.37 has also tightened notably (shift +0.24).
VIX has tightened too, but in the other direction: the 30-day correlation is -0.38 against a flat -0.08 over the year, a shift of +0.30 in absolute terms. That means gold has recently been moving against volatility spikes rather than with them — a break from gold's classic fear-hedge behaviour and further evidence that the recent price action is being driven by something other than pure safe-haven flow. Silver (+0.93 at 30 days) and platinum (+0.83) remain gold's tightest, steadiest companions, largely unchanged from their year-long norms.
The News Flow
Geopolitical risk is doing almost all the work in today's index. It carries a weight of 76.25 across 1,369 stories — by far the dominant channel — with a strongly positive polarity of +0.481. Today's flow is heavy with escalation: Houthi attacks on Saudi facilities, Saudi Arabia's counter-offensive, a new front described in the US-Iran standoff, and a political crisis brewing in Ukraine around its ousted defence minister. A thick layer of sanctions headlines — EU measures on Iranian judges, Chinese firms, a Georgian refinery, plus US sanctions on Jalisco cartel networks — adds to the tally without shifting sentiment much either way.
Set against that, real yields are pulling the other direction, with a polarity of -0.528 on a weight of 13.05, and monetary policy is mildly negative too (-0.196, weight 21.19). The US dollar channel sits at -0.292. Direct gold commentary is close to neutral (-0.047) despite carrying 576 stories. Net effect: geopolitics is outmuscling the more traditionally gold-negative signals from yields and the dollar.
What To Watch
The index's own lead relationship is worth flagging plainly: over the 145 hours of history recorded so far, a high index reading has been followed by weaker gold prices 12 hours later, with a correlation of -0.610 — the strongest of the lags measured, and statistically significant, as are the 1h, 3h and 6h readings. That is a short, thin sample, but it argues for treating today's elevated 6.61 reading as a snapshot of consensus mood rather than a forward signal in itself. Watch whether the Bitcoin and copper correlations hold or fade, whether the Gulf escalation headlines cool, and whether real yields reassert their pull.
